PersonnelCharles Churchman P.E., VP Engineering Plant Systems, Chemical & Process Engineering: Background in chemical engineering and alternative energy systems including biomass-to-energy. Responsible for all engineering activities at IAE including design, feasibility studies, cost estimating, and technology development. Specific areas of expertise include facilities/utilities engineering, process engineering for plant design, and simulation/modeling including Aspen™, ChemCAD™, and Barracuda™. This also includes development and implementation of plant projects including synthetic gas technology, MSW waste-to-energy, and applications of Fischer-Tropsch technology. Retired from The Babcock & Wilcox Company, with a broad technical and marketing knowledge of boiler products and their applications. Involved in the broad areas of boiler design, application, operation and performance. Active in the TAPPI Steam and Power Committee and the Black Liquor Recovery Boiler Advisory Committee. Holder of several boiler and process patents. Published and presented twenty two technical papers in North America and internationally. Responsible for managing the engineering of refinery gas-fired boilers in Mexico, investigation of Recovery Boiler incidents for AF & PA, Chairman of the BLRBAC Waste Streams subcommittee and participated in a technical team evaluating alternatives to improve black liquor gasification. Experienced in applying energy conversion technologies utilizing renewable energy sources, especially biomass. Technical responsibility as Principal Engineer, specializing in consulting projects for utilities, developers, financial institutions, businesses, and governmental organizations. Functional responsibility is to lead the marketing and business development arm of IAE. This includes development of and coordination of the transfer of proprietary technologies, including drying, gasification and other energy conversion technologies, from companies supplying the technologies to licensees and users. Considerable expertise in biomass and other specialty fuel applications such as gasification evaluation and design, biomass drying applications and evaluations, EPC contract negotiations, and power plant design and operations. Provides corporate clients with green and renewable energy program development and management services. Sells and markets Green Certificates derived from electricity produced by biomass facilities. Experience in high-tech manufacturing industries and research and development administration. Has worked extensively with government agencies and non-profit organizations on environmental and energy issues. Worked at the Georgia legislature and served in various professional and volunteer roles with the Georgia Environmental Council and the Georgia chapter of the Sierra Club. Extensive experience in engineering and project management of supply only and complete turnkey installations of air pollution control equipment, heat exchangers, and materials handling systems. Experience includes design, marketing, cost estimation, and firm price proposals complete with guarantees and warranties for performance; managing the design, manufacture, and installation of air pollution control equipment and developing operations and maintenance manuals. Supervised the installation, integration and commercial operation of biomass fuel drying systems in many different applications throughout North America including power generation for a 35 MW equivalent pulp and paper application. Managed the installation and start-up of turnkey systems and trained plant personnel in the operation and maintenance of power generation systems. Led the design of unique applications for biomass drying systems including co-firing with fossil fuels, sludge drying for fuel purposes and 100% suspension firing to replace oil. Supervised engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) personnel, provided manufacturing startup expertise; and, tuning of retrofit gasifier and combustion systems for energy clients. Also performs cost estimates and works directly with clients. At present, directing multiple alternative energy projects utilizing the conversion of woody biomass to gas or steam. Background includes machine design, manufacturing oversight and documentation. This includes the responsibility for coordinating the procurement and installation of mechanical equipment; and, directing engineers and designers. Experience includes technical and economic evaluations, cost estimates, budgets, schedules, procurement, installation, start up, testing, operation, and maintenance of projects and systems. In addition, made technical evaluations and decisions required to meet the clean water National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance for all power generating plants operated by a major southeast utility and for calculating the air emission for dozens of power facilities.
